Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

We would like to wish all our friends and supporters and their families a very Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and prosperous 2014. It has been a wonderful year for our projects with the announcement that the Plan Canada commitment to help young women and youth in Tanzania start small businesses has been fully funded. We are excited that the project has been completed but also looking forward to announcing a new project in 2014. Plans are already underway for a golf tournament and variety show fundraisers  next year.

Take good care and we will see you soon!

Interview

It was my pleasure and truly an honour to be interviewed on International Mountain Day (Dec. 11 – who knew, right?) by Nigerian United Nations blogger, Ebenezar Wikina. Ebenezer calls his interviews The Stroll and he has interviewed such notables as Christina Lamb, co-author of “I Am Malala” and Ndaba Mandela, one of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons.

Please take the time to read some of his other interview as well.

A Christmas Idea Like No Other

Although I’m not actively involved in this project, it is one I fully support and endorse. I feel it is another case of helping girls raise their country out of poverty.

Girls in communities in Cameroon are still unable to attend even primary school. More than 60% of these young girls are home because they do not have the means to attend school or have a normal life. Many as young as 15 already have children, many are married, many are exposed to sexual exploitation, trafficking, poor health care, all because they do not have an education.

The key to protecting girls from trafficking, prostitution and unwanted pregnancies is education and a small donation goes a long way to doing that. Our donations of any size can help. For example, $10 will sew a pair of uniforms a girl can use for a year, $50 will train five girls in computer skills and $85 will pay a girl’s school fees for a year.  A larger donation, like $500, will buy text books for three classes of 100 students!!

A donation of any amount is a fantastic Christmas idea and this project is worthy of our support. Consider helping the girls of Cameroon lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty they are in. Believe me, you will feel good about yourself if you do.

Project Update

I’m very happy to report that the Plan Canada commitment to the project to help young women and youth in Tanzania start small businesses will be completed at the end of this year – two full years ahead of schedule. If you have contributed in any way to our portion of the project, you should be patting yourself on the back right now because we have collectively raised a little over $90,000, including the federal government’s share.

So, a huge thank you goes out to all who have helped us help Plan Canada meet their commitment. You are all amazing!!!

Spotlight on Talent #5

Our final spotlight for the 3rd annual Education for Africa Variety Show to be held at Greenfields Pub on October 20 at 1:30 is on the incredibly talented Paul Deslauriers who will be joining us from Montreal to close the show.

Paul has over two decades of experience in the music industry (he says he began his career in his early teens!!!), seven albums under his belt, and a list of fans that extends into Europe and the US. He is a virtuoso on both electric and acoustic guitars, is part of Canada’s guitar elite and is considered one of Quebec’s overall best guitarists.

If you have seen Paul perform, you know this is a show you don’t want to miss. If you haven’t yet seen him this is your opportunity.

Also performing at the show will be Angélique Leduc, dancers from the Chad Wolfe Studio of Dance and Music and the dynamic jazz duo of Pete Woods and James McGowan.

Our special guess MC is DAWG FM’s Patricia Lever.

Tickets are available at the door or securely online athttp://bit.ly/1etlnUc.
